KA IWI CHANNEL RELAY

Aloha,

We would like to invite you and a partner(s) to join us on SUNDAY, MAY 4th, 2003 for the STARBUCKS KAIWI CHANNEL RELAY, on One and Two Person outrigger canoes between the islands of MOLOKAI and OAHU in HAWAII.

Nine divisions will be offered for this event which include, OPEN MEN, OPEN WOMEN, MIXED OPEN, MASTERS MEN (40 YRS+.) SENIOR MASTERS MEN (50+), MASTERS WOMEN (40+) in OC-1’s, and Men Open, Women Open and Open mixed for the OC-2’s. All divisions are team events.

OC-1 teams will have two people per entry; OC-2 teams will have FOUR people. The start of the race will be off the west-end of Molokai fronting the KALUA KOI HOTEL.

8:00am SHARP -
Open Women (OC-1) Masters Women 40+ (OC-1)

8:30 - Open Mixed (OC-1& OC-2), Open Women (OC-2), Masters Men 50+ (OC-1)

9:00 - Open Men (OC-1), Masters Men 40+ (OC-1), Open Men (OC-2)

FINISH:

The finish of the event will be at Magic Island and the Ala Wai Harbor at approximately 2:15 PM. An awards ceremony will follow the race at Ala Moana Park). The length of the course is 40.0 miles. Each team will be responsible for the transportation of all equipment including canoe, escort boat, and race supplies, as well as food and lodging prior to the crossing **.

RULES:

EQUIPMENT- hull design is open. All canoes must have an outrigger consisting of two "IAKO"(SEPARATED BY THE PADDLER), and one "AMA". Single blade paddles made from any material; any size or shape may be used. THIS RACE IS BY INVITATION AND ENTRY WILL BE GRANTED BASED ON QUALIFYING. Paddlers will be rated by the race committee and will be assigned a category that will correspond to the conditions of the race day as established by the race director and the race committee. If conditions are deemed unsafe for a category, that group will be denied entry into the event. NO REFUND WILL BE ISSUED FOR ANY DIVISON THAT IS RESTRICTED DUE TO UNSAFE CONDITIONS.

ESCORT:

Every entry must have an escort boat with a minimum fifteen foot hull and forty hp. motor, No large boats over thirty feet will be allowed within 200ft. of any canoe, without clearance from the race director. You will not be able to leave the beach without escort. Making drops from the teams escort boat will perform CHANGES- Open Ocean changes. REPAIRS AND ADJUSTMENTS- The teams escort boat will be allowed to carry extra components and equipment for the canoe and it's paddlers. Any team may use any equipment being carried by an escort boat. Every entry must paddle the entire race using the same hull they begin with.
